United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said on Tuesday he sees little chance for quick progress in ending the war in Ukraine, citing incompatible positions between Kiev and Moscow. Speaking at a press conference ahead of the 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, he warned that prospects for peace remain uncertain. “I am not optimistic about the short-term progress in the peace process in Ukraine. The positions of both sides are now largely incompatible,” Guterres said. He stressed that “Ukraine has a legitimate interest to preserve its territorial integrity, and it’s clear that Russia is determined to do something that would mean the occupation of large parts of Ukraine. “Looking ahead to the UNGA, Guterres also noted he would welcome a meeting with US President Donald Trump, adding that Washington’s ability to use both “carrots and sticks” could complement UN efforts in peace mediation.
